  1. What do I need to get started?

  2. All you need is a computer, a laser printer that uses toner, and Internet connectivity. Laser printers using toner are required for use with the new durable paper tag stock.

  1. Will I need special software or equipment?

  2. Since the system is Internet based, there is no software to purchase, download or maintain. Laser printers using toner are required for use with the new durable paper tag stock.

  1. What about special supplies?

  2. DMV will provide at no cost, specially designed perforated durable tag stock for use with laser printers using toner.

  1. Where do I get my tag stock?

  2. To place an order for durable stock printer paper, send an email to podtemptag@dmv.virginia.gov with the following information: dealer name, dealer number, shipping address, order quantity, tag size(s) (standard/small), and printer make/model number. Approved order requests will be shipped within ten (10) business days. Standard tags will be issued in packs of 100 and small tags (motorcycle/trailer) in packs of 25.

  1. How do I sign up?

  2. Simply click here to register. Once you have been verified and approved by the DMV (this process can take up to 3 business days), access will be granted to the PODs system where you may complete your registration and establish your billing account information, add other users within your dealership, and begin issuing temporary tags.

    Helpful Hint: We recommend adding, at a minimum, a second user to your account immediately upon completing your registration.

  1. What is the cost?

  2. As of July 1, 2012, the new statutory fee for temporary vehicle tags is $3.00 per set of original issue tags or extended tags. Reprints are free. Branded tags cost an additional $2.00 per set. 5-day transport tags are $1.50 per set.

  1. Can I get a refund for voided temp tags?

  2. No, fees are recorded immediately with every issued or extended temporary tag and are not refundable.

  1. What about fraud, won't these temporay tags make it easy?

  2. On the contrary, real time data available to law enforcement make these tags more secure. Each unique tag number is associated with the customer and vehicle. Due to increased legibility and the larger tag numbers, law enforcement officers can check and verify the tags in minutes from the safety of their vehicles. Print on demand temporary tags have been approved by both the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Sheriffs' Association.
